Description

Sometime in the past, the people of the country of Parts had found a way to become immortal, but only with elderly nobles. Five of these elders—Ballossum Pench, Gabriel Hammer, Jimchuck Spanner, Olsorro Slasher, and Leonard Drill—obtained immortality, and became known as the Motoruin sages. Eventually, they attempted to take over the Parts kingdom and start a new world order, collapsing the government and destroying parts of the country in the process. As their plans unfold, five children of one of these villages decide to battle the Motoruin using another new invention: the semi-automatic propelling engine, known as “Progear”.

Progear

Overview & History

Released in 2001 by Capcom and developed by Cave, Progear (officially titled Progear no Arashi, or Storm of Progear) stands as a unique masterpiece in the bullet-hell genre. Unlike traditional vertical-scrolling shoot 'em ups set in deep space, Progear drops players into a steampunk Dieselpunk world where children pilot state-of-the-art propeller fighter planes called Gunner Ships. Driven by a bitter generational war between the aging elders of the Kingdom of Lusister and the rebellious youth, the game delivers a brilliant narrative told through stunning anime-style artwork and frantic aerial dogfights.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Progear utilizes a horizontal side-scrolling format powered by Cave’s trademark bullet-hell engine, known for filling the screen with mesmerizing patterns of projectile fire. Players can choose between two distinct pilot-and-gunner duos: Bolt, who commands the agile Ring Leader ship with focused straight-firing munitions, or Rivet, who pilots the heavier Gunner III with wide-spread firepower. The core mechanic revolves around the amber-to-lead scoring system: destroying enemies releases rings that convert into massive point-multiplying gems when collected close to enemy formations. Additionally, players can unleash a devastating Bomb attack that instantly clears the screen of bullets, turning hazardous situations into score-boosting opportunities while building up a strategic chain meter.
