Description
Quartet 2 was produced by Sega in 1986. (Sun Corporation of America published it in North America)
Human characters collect guns and power-ups to destroy a variety of robots in a space base. Defeat the boss character and collect the key to unlock the base’s door and move on to the next level. Up to two people may join in on the fun.
This game was released shortly after the dedicated Quartet. Quartet 2 is not a sequel but rather a conversion kit that could be placed in two-player cabinets. The only real difference between the two game is Quartet 2 allows up to two players to choose from the four available characters. The game has side-scrolling action and a Gauntlet-like join-in type play. The four characters each have a different name and wear a different color. They are Joe (yellow), Mary (red), Lee (blue) and Edgar (green).
Your job is to basically find the end-of-level boss, and then defeat it to obtain the key that will open the level exit, but your task is made difficult by the planet’s inhabitants. Get the jet-pack to make it easier to navigate the level and shoot any inhabitants that get in the way. These inhabitants will leave behind something that you can get to increase your score, and the inhabitants will eventually regenerate. If any one of them touches you while you have the jet-pack, you land on the ground or the nearest platform, and have to get it again; and the same rule applies to the key.

Overview & History
Released by Sega in 1986 as a swift follow-up to the original coin-op hit, *Quartet 2* refined the fast-paced, co-operative arcade shooter formula. While the first game was strictly tailored for four simultaneous players using a bulky dedicated cabinet, *Quartet 2* altered the industry landscape by scaling the player count down to two, making it vastly more viable for standard arcade operators. The overarching storyline drops players into a sprawling, labyrinthine futuristic space station infested by swarms of rogue biomechanical mutants and aggressive syndicate bosses. Your mission is to navigate each hazardous deck, retrieve the stolen security doors' exit keys from high-ranking gatekeepers, and unlock the final portal to advance. Distinctly ahead of its time, the game featured a dynamic soundtrack composed by Hiroshi Kawaguchi, blending synth-rock grooves that pulsed in rhythm with the chaotic screen-clearing action.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Mechanically, *Quartet 2* combines platforming traversal with a top-to-bottom run-and-gun perspective. Players choose from a distinct roster of futuristic mercenaries—such as the agile Edgar or the heavily armed Lee—each sporting identical baseline physics but unique visual flair. The screen autoscrolls or shifts through maze-like corridors peppered with destructible walls, floating enemies, and traversal hazards like bottomless pits and moving elevators. To survive the onslaught, players must collect jetpacks scattered across the stages, granting temporary flight to bypass complex terrain and reach high-altitude ledges. Defeating glowing red enemy commanders yields essential exit keys, without which the final elevator remains permanently locked. Furthermore, the game supports drop-in co-op play, allowing a second player to join mid-match and shift the tactical balance by dividing enemy aggro and covering blind spots during chaotic boss encounters.
