Rabbit

Overview & History

Released in 1997 by Electronic Arts and developed by Aorn, Rabbit is a cult-classic, cyberpunk-themed 2D fighting game that stood out in arcades for its bizarre character roster and gritty aesthetic. Set in a dystopian future where genetically altered human-animal hybrids are forced to fight in a brutal underground tournament known as the "Rabbit" death match, the game combined traditional sprite-based combat with rapid-fire aerial combos. Unlike standard fighters of the era, Rabbit leaned heavily into a dark, industrial techno soundtrack and a surreal storyline exploring themes of corporate bio-engineering and rebellion, making it a memorable, albeit obscure, relic of late-90s arcade culture.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Rabbit utilizes a fast-paced four-button arcade layout consisting of weak and strong attacks paired with dedicated jump and dash inputs. Players choose from a bizarre lineup of fighters—such as a cybernetically enhanced assassin rabbit, a mutated bulldog, and bio-engineered humanoids—each featuring distinct transformation mechanics. By executing successful combos, characters build up a "Wild Meter" that unlocks devastating super moves and temporary hyper-speed states. The fighting engine emphasizes high-mobility aerial skirmishes, allowing players to air-dash, double-jump, and execute mid-air juggles reminiscent of classic anime fighters. Stages feature dynamic multi-tiered scrolling backgrounds that immerse players deeper into the neon-soaked, decaying cyberpunk arenas.
