Description

The royal family of Bunnyland was kidnapped by monsters and the player has to save them by beating all six levels of this side-scrolling shooter. The reason why the protagonist, a rabbit, can fly is the rocket launcher on his back.

Just like in most shooters, the main objective is to survive the way to the end boss of each level without getting hit by enemies (three hits result in a life loss). The rabbit has three ways to defend itself: a regular gun, a strong melee punch and limited homing missiles. The power ups are shield energy refreshments, extra points, invincibility, more missiles and missile upgrades.

Rabbit Punch

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1987, Rabbit Punch (originally known in Japan as Chack'n Pop II, though it evolved into a distinct entity) is a quirky, anthropomorphic arcade action game. Blending platforming elements with vertical scrolling brawler mechanics, the game follows the escapades of a determined, boxing-gloved rabbit named Rappy. Unlike standard side-scrolling beat 'em ups of the era, Rappy must ascend vertical stages while confronting a bizarre menagerie of hostile creatures, ranging from mischievous monkeys to flying fish. Its distinct visual style, characterized by pastel-toned graphics and expressive sprite animations, captured the whimsical arcade aesthetic of the late '80s, offering a lighter alternative to the gritty urban brawlers dominating the landscape at the time.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around vertical ascension and close-quarters combat. Players navigate Rappy up multi-tiered platforms using ladders and springboards while avoiding environmental hazards like rolling barrels and descending spikes. Rappy’s primary offense is his trusty pair of boxing gloves, allowing for rapid-fire jabs and devastating hook punches against enemies. Players can also collect various power-ups scattered across the stages—such as winged boots for enhanced jump height, speed potions, and special boxing glove upgrades that extend punch range or unleash projectile energy blasts. Each stage culminates in a chaotic boss encounter where timing, positioning, and aggressive punching are required to knock out oversized opponents before the stage timer expires. The game demands both precise platforming agility and aggressive offensive tactics to achieve a high score.
