Description

Rafflesia is a top view vertical scrolling shooter where the screen scrolls constantly as you fly up the screen in your spacecraft. The aim is to blast or avoid the various aliens that move around the screen to finally face the final boss Rafflesia. As you blast and avoid, you are equipped with two weapons, both are forward firing weapons but the second one is more powerful and when in use decreases your energy. Falling down the screen constantly are tears from Rafflesia and when collected these increase your energy. If you are hit by an alien or its weapon then you lose one of three lives. Two players can play with each player taking it in turn when the other player is killed.

Released into Japanese arcades in 1986 by Coreland, Rafflesia is an obscure, highly eccentric vertical-scrolling shoot-'em-up that plunges players into a surreal biological nightmare. Unlike standard sci-fi shmups of the mid-80s that pitted pilots against alien armadas or mechanical dreadnoughts, Rafflesia revolves around a grotesque botanical theme. You pilot a specialized organic combat pod deep into the mutating tendrils and toxic spores of a colossal, sentient extraterrestrial flower—the titular Rafflesia—which threatens to consume the galaxy with its parasitic biomass. The game gained a cult following for its haunting, fleshy aesthetic and distinctive stage design, which made every level feel less like outer space and more like navigating the digestive tract of a cosmic plant. Though it never achieved the widespread mainstream ubiquity of contemporary Konami or Capcom titles, its unique visual identity and demanding difficulty curve have made it a treasured curio among arcade preservationists and retro enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mechanically, Rafflesia twists traditional shmup conventions by incorporating claustrophobic maze-like corridors alongside standard open-air vertical scrolling. Players must carefully navigate their ship through pulsing organic walls, dodging caustic acid drops, snapping floral jaws, and swarms of insectoid spore-defenders. Unlike contemporaries where firepower simply obliterates obstacles, Rafflesia introduces destructible and regenerative terrain; certain biological barriers must be cleared rapidly before they heal over. Your ship is equipped with a dual-firing system that upgrades by collecting glowing pollen nodes dropped by mutated flora bosses. Character moves are tied entirely to positioning and crowd control: your standard pea-shooter evolves into a sweeping spore-laser, while a limited-use "Nectar Bomb" triggers a cellular implosion, clearing the immediate screen of both minor enemies and hazardous projectiles while temporarily slowing down the encroaching biological walls.
