Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1988, Raimais is a cult-classic arcade maze game that blends frantic puzzle-solving with high-speed vehicular action. Unlike typical top-down maze runners, players assume the role of a daredevil pilot named Bea, navigating a futuristic labyrinth to rescue her captured comrades from a subterranean labyrinthine empire. Distinct from Taito's more ubiquitous releases of the era, Raimais stands out for its unorthodox blend of geometry, strict time management, and continuous, momentum-based driving physics, earning it a dedicated following among arcade purveyors who favored reflex-heavy puzzle challenges.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players steer a sleek, perpetually moving armored vehicle through claustrophobic, scrolling mazes filled with enemy patrols, dead ends, and geometric obstacles. The core objective is twofold: collect all the glowing energy orbs scattered across the grid and rescue trapped prisoners before the countdown timer hits zero. Your vehicle cannot stop moving on its own; instead, it glides smoothly along tracks, requiring precise foresight to navigate sharp ninety-degree turns. To survive the onslaught of rival buggies and defensive turrets, players can deploy limited-use smart bombs that obliterate onscreen foes. Additionally, navigating specific warp gates allows you to bypass massive sections of the labyrinth, adding a layer of strategic routing to the otherwise chaotic gameplay. Power-ups spawn dynamically, granting temporary invulnerability, speed boosts, or freeze capabilities to help conquer increasingly labyrinthine stages.
