Description

Travel to several alien-infested space stations to rescue children. Defeat the end boss before returning to your ship. Pick up a variety of weapons to help you eliminate your foes.

Two players control two soldiers named Ricky and Mary, who must fight their way through large eight-way scrolling levels rescuing their comrades who are being held by aliens. After they have rescued a certain number of hostages, the exit opens, and they can pass through it in order to fight the end-of-level guardian. If this monstrosity is defeated, they move onto the next stage. As well as two player simultaneous gameplay, Alien Syndrome features pick-ups which assist the player, including better weapons and maps of the current level.

Alien Syndrome

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1987, Alien Syndrome is a pioneering sci-fi run-and-gun arcade game that blends frantic shoot-'em-up action with top-down maze navigation and intense survival horror elements. The storyline thrusts players into a dark, bio-mechanical nightmare aboard massive, infested space stations overrun by grotesque, H.R. Giger-inspired extraterrestrial monstrosities. Tasked with the role of space marines Ricky and Mary, your mission is twofold: rescue your trapped human comrades scattered throughout the labyrinthine decks, and ultimately obliterate the grotesque alien queen controlling the hive mind. Built on Sega's System 16 hardware, the game stands out for its distinct claustrophobic atmosphere, multi-directional scrolling, and urgent time-limit mechanics that keep players constantly moving through increasingly complex, organic-looking corridors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear shooters of its era, Alien Syndrome requires tactical exploration and hostage rescue. Players navigate top-down, interconnected decks while collecting keycards to unlock sealed exit doors. The HUD features a localized radar map displaying the positions of both hidden survivors and relentless alien foes. Rescuing a set number of crew members unlocks the boss gateway for that stage, leading to bizarre, multi-stage grotesque monstrosities. To survive, players utilize a variety of upgradable weaponry—ranging from standard pulses to flamethrowers, fire bombs, and laser beams—retrieved from strategically placed armory lockers. With relentless enemy spawn rates and punishing difficulty spikes, success demands precise positioning, efficient crowd control, and memorization of deck layouts before the station's self-destruction countdown reaches zero.
