Description

A good-looking horizontally scrolling shoot ’em up with a few unique features that make it stand out in the crowd.

2 players can join Team Rohga and take on the dark forces of Lagnalok in this sequel to Vapor Trail. Choose from 4 pre-built battle suits or construct your own using one of four possible parts from 3 categories – Arm, Body and Leg Unit.

When your battle suit runs out of energy or is destroyed by the enemy, you will eject out of the cockpit and continue fighting.

The arcade versions outside Japan have a number of things cut. There is no story intermissions between the stages and there is no stage selection leading to 4 different endings found on the Japanese version, but the game cycles through all 12 stages like in the Japanese version’s expert mode.

Rohga Armor Force

Overview & History

Released by Data East in 1991 for arcade cabinets, Rohga Armor Force (known in Japan as Wolf Fang: Kuhga 2001) is a cult-classic mecha run-and-gun platformer that acts as a thematic successor to 1990's Desert Assault. Set in a dystopian, war-torn future where humanity faces annihilation from rogue military factions, the storyline follows elite pilots tasked with deploying the experimental Rohga armored suit. Unlike traditional infantry shooters, players don't just control a soldier; they pilot a fully customizable, heavy-artillery exoskeleton capable of transforming combat dynamics across six explosive stages, complete with distinct atmospheric hazards and towering mechanized bosses.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

What sets Rohga Armor Force apart from its contemporaries is its unprecedented level of pre-mission mech customization. Before sortieing, players select their armor's components—combining different torso weapons (such as flamethrowers, heavy lasers, or homing missiles), distinct arm appendages (including melee shields and rapid-fire cannons), and legs that dictate mobility, ranging from traditional treads to quadrupedal walkers and jet-propelled hover systems. During gameplay, pilots can eject from their heavily damaged suits as a vulnerable infantry unit to salvage power-ups or commandeer alternative defensive turrets. The action is frantic, forcing players to manage directional firing, devastating bomb attacks that clear the screen of bullets, and tactical positioning across multi-tiered battlefields featuring destructible environmental elements.
