Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1990 as a coin-operated arcade beat-'em-up, Rollergames capitalized on the short-lived, high-octane syndicated television phenomenon of the same name, which blended professional wrestling with roller derby and obstacle courses. Unlike its entirely different NES counterpart, the arcade version is a fast-paced, side-scrolling action game where players choose from one of three distinct vigilantes—Hot Metal, Bad Habit, or Rakka—to fight their way through anarchic, futuristic urban landscapes. The overarching plot tasks these roller-skated heroes with rescuing kidnapped orphans from a syndicate of punk gangs and corrupt officials, culminating in high-speed vehicular and skating showdowns.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game distinguishes itself through its unique momentum-based movement system, as the characters remain on roller skates throughout the stages. Players must master continuous sliding friction while navigating vertically inclined ramps, leaping over industrial hazards, and battling aggressive biker thugs, mutant hounds, and armored bosses. Combat relies on a dynamic two-button setup allowing for punches, kicks, and devastating aerial flying dropkicks. Throughout the stages, players can collect spray cans to upgrade their weapons or unleash screen-clearing special attacks. Interspersed between standard brawler levels are mandatory high-speed bonus stages that require players to grind rails and duck obstacles while racing down perilous half-pipes under a strict countdown timer.
