Description

R-Shark is a 2D vertical-scrolling sci-fi shoot’em up. The player takes the role of a headhunter, and gets to chose to go after one of eight interstellar criminals. Gameplay is similar to a myriad of other shmups: The player in a special space ship flies and shoots at enemies – main interstellar criminals are bosses. His ship has a weak main weapon, and some support in the form of homing missiles, but better weapons like a laser can be acquired. Weapons are also upgradable and offer super attacks.

R-Shark

Overview & History

Released by Wizart in 1994, R-Shark is a classic vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up that drops players into a high-stakes maritime sci-fi war. Set in a near-future dystopia where a rogue corporate artificial intelligence has commandeered a massive naval defense network, humanity's last hope rests on the shoulders of elite fighter pilots. You take control of the titular R-Shark fighter jet, tasked with breaking through heavily fortified oceanic and coastal enemy lines filled with battleships, submarines, mechanized sea monsters, and aerial squadrons. While it operates in the crowded shadow of giants like Toaplan and Cave releases, R-Shark carved out a distinct niche with its gritty, metallic industrial aesthetic and a relentless, coin-munching arcade difficulty curve.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard sci-fi shooters set entirely in deep space, R-Shark brilliantly utilizes its water-bound theater of war. Stages dynamically transition from open ocean surfaces to submerged trench bases and sprawling coastal fortress docks. The gameplay revolves around a traditional power-up system where defeating specific red and blue carrier units yields weapon upgrades. Players can cycle through or stack distinct munitions, ranging from widespread plasma scatter shots to concentrated forward-firing lasers and devastating homing missiles. A standout mechanic is the smart-bomb system, which unleashes a full-screen tactical nuclear strike, wiping out minor bullets and dealing massive screen-clearing damage to screen-filling boss units—ranging from colossal floating dreadnoughts to heavily armed hovering super-submersibles. The game also features a scoring multiplier system tied to chaining enemy destructions without taking a hit.
