Description

Savage Bees was produced by Memetron in 1985.

Players must shoot down a variety of flying bugs and scrolling land bases. Collect the POW bonuses to power up your craft and turn the enemies into fruit for more points. Fight the large boss craft at the end of each stage.
The game is similar in style to Xevious execpt that your craft can collide with the ground objects and your forward fire destroys all enemy objects. The game sounds are almost exactly like those of Mega Force.

Savage Bees

Overview & History

Released during the golden age of arcade gaming, Savage Bees is a cult-classic vertical fixed shooter that challenged players with aggressive, insectoid swarm mechanics. Developed as a direct response to the space-shooter craze of the early 1980s, the game drops players into a mutated ecosystem where a genetically altered hive of extra-dimensional bees threatens the planetary flora. Unlike its contemporaries that featured mechanical alien armadas, Savage Bees stood out with its eerie, organic sound design and pulsating, hive-like cabinet art. Players control the "Pesticide Interceptor," a heavily modified hover-craft designed to penetrate the toxic queen's nest and neutralize the swarming menace before the colony reaches critical mass.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay loop of Savage Bees is defined by its erratic, swooping enemy flight patterns and punishing difficulty. As waves descend from the top of the screen, individual bees break formation to perform kamikaze-style curved dives directly at the player's craft. A standout mechanic is the "Hive Mind" system: if a player destroys the worker bees too quickly without targeting the emerging larvae pods, the remaining swarm enrages, increasing their flight speed by fifty percent and altering their projectile color to a deadly crimson. Power-ups spawn irregularly via high-value carrier beetles, granting temporary dual-laser upgrades, temporary invulnerability energy shields, or screen-clearing "Sonic Boom" pulses. Surviving later stages requires memorizing the aggressive entry trajectories of the mutant queen bosses, who employ defensive honeycomb barriers and spawn bullet-sponge guard hornets.
