Description

An excellent airplane shooter from Sega that has excellent graphics, an excellent soundtrack, and lots of zooming effects.

The player starts out with a propelled plane that can fire air-to-air twin machine guns and air-to-ground rockets. These weapons are used for destroying waves of enemy planes and ground and sea units. The main plane is destroyed by one hit. If a certain enemy is destroyed the player can collect a comrade fighter to fight alongside the main plane. Up to two comrade fighters can be collected. The comrade fighters can be assigned to fight in the air to fire bullets or they can be assigned to fight at low altitude to fire air-to-ground rockets. The comrade fighters can also be launched to do a kamikaze attack explosion against the enemy. After kamikaze attacks, the comrade fighters are retrievable, but they are lost if they are shot or crash into an enemy. In some areas of certain stages, the player will fly at a lower altitude armed with only twin machine guns and shooting down parked planes and turrets and can take a limited amount of damage from multiple shots and crashes. At the end of each stage, the player must destroy a boss vehicle to proceed.

Scramble Spirits

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1988 for the System E arcade hardware, Scramble Spirits is a distinctive pseudo-3D vertical scrolling shoot 'em up that flips the traditional top-down perspective on its head. Departing from the cosmic and futuristic sci-fi tropes dominating the late '80s arcade scene, the game tasks players with piloting state-of-the-art fighter jets over terrestrial, heavily militarized landscapes. Rather than looking straight down, the viewpoint is angled forward from a high-altitude rear perspective, creating a striking sense of depth as incoming enemy squadrons, ground installations, and towering dreadnoughts loom large from the top of the screen before rushing past your wings. Although it never achieved the ubiquitous legacy of Sega's After Burner or Space Harrier, this hidden gem carved out a niche for its ambitious scaling effects, frantic pacing, and unique positioning mechanics.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, Scramble Spirits challenges players to survive relentless waves of aerial and terrestrial assaults across multiple escalating stages. Unlike many contemporary shmup titles, the game introduces a dual-layered combat system: your primary weapons tear through airborne enemy jets, while targeted bombs or secondary projectiles are required to obliterate heavily armored tanks, artillery emplacements, and naval vessels crawling across the shifting terrain below. Power-ups are scattered throughout the chaotic airspace, upgrading your firepower, expanding your spread shot, and granting temporary invulnerability shields. The pseudo-3D engine means dodging enemy fire requires calculating both horizontal evasion and depth perception, as projectiles scale up dynamically, threatening to overwhelm the screen. Fast-paced mid-bosses and screen-filling end-of-stage behemoths test your reflexes, demanding precise positioning in a congested 3D corridor.
