Description
Sega Ninja (also known as Ninja Princess) is an action shooter. You play as a female ninja as you fight your way through hordes of enemies on your quest to recapture territories and to take back the Castle all of which have been captured and occupied by the enemy forces. Throwing knives and shuriken are your weapons as you shoot your way through enemy occupied territory. Coming into contact with any enemies or any of their thrown projectile weapons equals instant death. Unlike the original arcade machine, the SG-1000 and MSX ports contain only 13 levels instead of 16.

Overview & History
Released by Sega in 1983 as an arcade coin-op, Sega Ninja (known in Japan as *Ninja Princess*) plunges players into a vibrant, feudal Japanese fairy tale. Unlike the grim, brooding ninja tropes popularized later in the decade, this title stars Princess Kurai, who must rescue her kidnapped father from the evil warlord Gyura. Utilizing Sega's pioneering hardware architecture of the era, the game stands out for its vertical and horizontal scrolling stages, colorful sprite scaling, and a distinct soundtrack that blends traditional Japanese motifs with upbeat 8-bit chiptunes. While it was later ported to home systems like the SG-1000 and MSX, the arcade original remains the definitive experience, celebrated for its frantic pace and challenging difficulty curve.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
The core gameplay loop alternates between vertical-scrolling jungle and mountain stages and horizontal castle sieges. Players control Princess Kurai as she runs continuously, automatically hurling an infinite supply of shuriken at relentless waves of rival ninja, samurai, hawks, and fire-breathing dragons. Kurai possesses a unique silhouette-shifting ninjutsu technique: collecting specific power-ups allows her to temporarily turn invisible or clone herself, dodging incoming kunai and lethal projectiles. Environmental hazards, ranging from collapsing bamboo bridges to hidden pitfalls, demand precise timing. Defeating specific wave leaders yields crucial bonus items, driving an addictive score-chasing dynamic that defined early '80s arcade culture.
