Description

A multi-player, multi-level labyrinth/maze game in the genre of Gauntlet; originally an arcade game. Players take the role of Kevin, who is trying to rescue his friends from their jail cells. As prisoners are released, they will attempt to follow Kevin, and also attack nearby enemies. Kevin’s goal is to lead each prisoner to the exit, and onto the next level. Some levels have hidden passages which lead to bonus/secret levels.

As with any Gauntlet-style game, finding enough keys to deal with each door is crucial. Kevin can pick up weapons such as grenades and boomerangs, and other enhancing objects such as faster movement, a smart-bomb diamond, and other bonus objects for points.

Shackled

Overview & History

Released by Data East in 1986 as a coin-operated arcade game, *Shackled*—also known in Japan as *Falsion*—is a top-down, dungeon-crawling action title that drops players into the dark, labyrinthine depths of a medieval fantasy fortress. While Data East was better known for side-scrolling brawlers and run-and-gun shooters, *Shackled* uniquely blends maze exploration with relentless combat. The storyline follows two courageous mercenaries infiltrating a gothic stronghold to rescue captives and defeat the dark overlord holding them bound in chains. Though it didn't achieve the mainstream phenomenon status of contemporary arcade giants, its distinct blend of tactical movement and resource management earned it a cult following among retro arcade enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard hack-and-slash games of its era, *Shackled* introduces a distinct strategic element through its titular shackles and item management system. Players navigate winding, trap-filled corridors viewed from a top-down perspective, battling hordes of skeletons, goblins, and supernatural beasts. The protagonist's primary arsenal consists of a sword for close-range melee strikes and a limited supply of ranged projectiles, such as throwing daggers or magic bombs, which must be conserved carefully. Throughout the maze, players must locate keys to unlock doors, rescue bound prisoners for bonus points and power-ups, and avoid environmental hazards like spike traps and collapsing floors. As levels progress, the dungeon layouts become increasingly labyrinthine, forcing players to memorize pathways and balance offensive assaults with defensive positioning to survive the relentless onslaught.
