Description

The game is mainly a horizontal scrolling shoot-em-up, although some scenes scroll vertically too. Shooting enemies will reveal power-ups and continually shooting them will either change their type or reveal a special weapon. Different weapons are more effective than others when fighting the end bosses.

Originating in the arcades, Side Arms is a horizontally scrolling shoot ‘em up in which you control Lieutenant Henry (a second player can control Sergeant Sanders in some versions), armed with crude weaponry and protective jump-suits. They must save the earth from the mercenary invaders of Bozon. You must first reach Bozon’s territories, then wipe out its forces hidden in caverns and lurking in underground seas, before destroying the main invasion ship. Lots of extra weapons can be picked up, often with similar tokens to those in 1943 and some other Capcom titles. Most weapons can be shot either to the left or the right, giving you more range to launch attacks.

Hyper Dyne: Side Arms

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1986, Hyper Dyne: Side Arms is a gritty, sci-fi horizontal scrolling shoot-'em-up that predates famous peers like R-Type. Dropping players into a bio-mechanical nightmare, the storyline follows an elite space pilot tasked with repelling an aggressive alien race known as the Bozon Empire, who have launched a sudden onslaught against Earth's space colonies. Notable for its unusual directional shooting mechanics and aggressive anime-inspired mecha aesthetics, the game was designed by Tokuro Fujiwara and features a distinctive heavy-synth soundtrack by Harumi Fujita. While it received successful home ports to the PC Engine and TurboGrafx-16, the coin-op original remains celebrated for its unforgiving arcade difficulty, intense two-player simultaneous cooperative gameplay, and striking sprite scaling.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard shmup templates where players control a static ship, Side Arms introduces a revolutionary Mobile Suit-style armor system. Players begin as a standard fighter craft, but collecting specific power-ups allows them to transform into a heavily armed humanoid armored mecha. This suit features dual-directional firing mechanics—a rarity for 1986—allowing players to shoot independently to the left and right simultaneously using a dedicated two-button attack layout. The game heavily utilizes specialized weaponry mapped to interchangeable power-up icons: players can cycle through standard blasters, wide-spreading three-way shots, devastating shotgun blasts, and homing missiles. A fully upgraded mecha can also attach a 'Yashichi' power-up or a defensive option drone to absorb enemy fire. Across seven diverse stages ranging from bio-organic alien interiors to floating debris fields, players face relentless waves of insectoid and mechanical monstrosities, culminating in multi-phase boss battles that require precise positioning and strategic weapon management to survive.
