Description

Silk Worm was produced by Tecmo in 1988.

Silkworm is a classic horizontally-scrolling shoot-em-up. The main difference between this game and many other side-scrolling shoot-em-ups is that you will be on land as well as in the air.

The first player would play as a helicopter, but if a second player joins the game, they would play as a jeep. Both players would have to protect each other as well as themselves. After a certain number of kills, a “goose” helicopter would form on the screen. If the players managed to destroy it they would get a weapon’s powerup. This would go on throughout the entire game, and a “goose” could appear even during the fight with the end-of-level baddie

Silk Worm

Overview & History

Developed and released by Tecmo in 1988, Silk Worm is a delightfully bizarre and innovative side-scrolling arcade shooter. Moving away from standard spaceship dogfights, the game drops players into a desert warzone against an onslaught of militarized mechanized threats, tanks, and strange alien-hybrid aircraft. Its unique selling point was the cooperative two-player dynamic, allowing one person to pilot a nimble helicopter while the other drove an aggressive, ground-hugging jeep. Ports to home computers like the Amiga, Atari ST, and Commodore 64 cemented its legacy, but the arcade original remains the definitive, coin-munching experience of chaotic destruction.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Silk Worm breaks genre conventions by forcing players to constantly juggle dual-threat awareness. Enemies attack from both the air and the ground, requiring precise coordination if playing co-op. The helicopter enjoys supreme vertical mobility and can dodge incoming fire by tilting its nose, whereas the heavily armed jeep possesses devastating ground firepower and can jump over obstacles, trenches, and enemy armor. As players progress through the stages, collecting power-ups upgrades weapon spread and grants devastating speed boosts. The game demands relentless reflexes, punishing greedy players who miss crucial power pods while navigating perilous canyon walls and hazardous boss encounters.
