Description

Sky Kid was produced by Namco in 1985.

You play a bi-plane pilot on missions to bomb enemy targets. Left to right scrolling screen, shoot at enemy planes and trucks. Fly down and pick up the bomb as you go along. Cartoon-style graphics and great music.

A great fun game, features 40 levels of game play with increasing difficulty and longer missions, with multiple targets to bomb as you go along. Avoid on-coming enemy planes, ground fire and air-balloons. Nice feature in that if you are shot down you can hit the loop button repeatedly to get control back of the plane. Some hidden bonus features, such as shooting the three dancing girls that appear when you complete a mission they turn into flowers. Excellent music and the graphics are all in a cartoon style.

Overview & History

Released by Namco in 1985, Sky Kid is a pioneering side-scrolling shoot-'em-up that trades standard futuristic starfighters for whimsical, aviator-goggled biplanes piloted by bird-like aviators named Pete and Max. Operating on Namco's proprietary Pac-Land hardware, the game introduced a distinct cartoon aesthetic and cooperative two-player simultaneous action to the arcade scene. Players embark on a campaign across various perilous operational zones, tasked with bombing enemy installations while dodging hostile ace pilots, blimps, and anti-aircraft fire, all while managing the crucial and mechanically unique loop-the-loop evasive maneuver.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional shmup titles that force constant forward scrolling, Sky Kid utilizes a two-way horizontal scrolling system that allows pilots to reverse direction at will. The primary objective of each stage is to intercept a bomb carrier, retrieve the explosive device, and successfully drop it onto a designated target stronghold—such as a heavily guarded fortress or a massive battleship—before returning safely to the landing strip. Surviving the skies requires mastery of the aircraft's handling, specifically the front-mounted machine gun used to clear obstacles and down enemy fighters, and the signature mid-air loop command. Executing this loop grants temporary invulnerability, allowing players to successfully evade tight pursuits or slip past dense flak barriers. Failing to pull up correctly from a loop, however, results in a catastrophic crash. The game also features checkpoint restarts upon destruction and awards bonus points for precise bomb placements and successful landings.
