Description

Sky Skipper was produced by Nintendo in 1982.

You pilot a plane and must rescue animals from cages where they were placed by gorillas. To do this, you fly over a gorilla and drop a bomb, knocking the gorilla off its feet. Once this is done, the animals will be out of their cages and you just touch each one to rescue it. The animal cages will only be open for a limited time, then the gorilla will get back on its feet. You must then knock it down again.

You mustn’t take too long rescuing the animals or you will run out of fuel. If you run out of fuel, run into a gorilla or the course walls or, strangely, a cloud, you lose a plane. You begin the game with four planes.

Sky Skipper

Overview & History

Released by Nintendo in 1981, Sky Skipper is a fascinating yet notoriously obscure title from the golden age of arcade gaming. Designed by Genyo Takeda and Yoshio Sakamoto before they achieved massive fame with other franchises, this vertically and horizontally scrolling game attempted to bridge the gap between action and puzzle mechanics. In this charming, animal-centric storyline, an avian pilot named Mr. Bird must pilot his biplane to rescue various animals—including monkeys, tigers, and bears—imprisoned in cages by an evil king. Due to its unconventional control scheme and high difficulty curve, the arcade cabinet saw limited commercial success and a very small production run, making original units exceptionally rare today.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard shoot-'em-ups of the era, Sky Skipper operates on a unique dual-layer mechanic. The screen constantly scrolls, dividing attention between the air and the ground. Players must navigate Mr. Bird's biplane through maze-like levels populated by hostile flying creatures and aerial obstacles while dropping bombs to feed or free captured animals scattered across platforms. Timing is critical; you must manage your fuel supply carefully while avoiding enemy projectiles and hazardous terrain. Rescuing an animal triggers a frantic escort phase where the freed creature clings to your plane's landing gear, requiring precise flying to deposit them safely into a designated goal zone before hostile guards can recapture them.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Steer the biplane (Up, Down, Left, Right)
  • Action Keys: Drop bombs / Interact with objects
  • Enter: Start / Pause
