The goblin empire became more powerful than ever thanks to the charismatic king Gobligan, a human who united goblins under his rule. King Caudwener knew that the goblins began mass production of magical weapons. Assassinating Gobligan seemed the only option. Four warriors volunteer to infiltrate the goblin empire and carry out this dangerous task.

Sorcer Striker, released in Japan as Mahou Daisakusen (魔法大作戦 “Magic Armageddon”), is a vertically scrolling shoot-em-up with a medieval fantasy theme mixed with modern weaponry and devices. The player can choose to control any of the four characters: fighter Gain, witch Chitta, reptile samurai Miyamoto, or necromancer Bornnam. Each of the characters flies through the stages and attacks with three types of main weapons, distinguished by color and taking different shapes depending on the chosen character: accurate homing fire (red), side weapons (blue), powerful straight attack (green). The weapons are changed by collecting magic books, and their power is enhanced by flying over coins that appear on the stages.

Released by Toaplan in 1993, Sorcer Striker (known as Mahou Daisensou in Japan) represents a brilliant fusion of traditional vertical-scrolling shoot-'em-up action and vibrant high-fantasy aesthetics. Developed during the twilight era of Toaplan before the company's closure, this arcade gem swapped out futuristic starships and cybernetic dreadnoughts for soaring wizards, mystical wyverns, and ancient kingdoms plagued by a resurrected dark emperor. Diverging from the bleak sci-fi tones of their earlier hits like Batsugun, Toaplan crafted a colorful, fast-paced fantasy realm driven by a memorable melodic soundtrack composed by Tatsuya Uemura, cementing its cult-classic status among retro arcade enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard shmup formulas, Sorcer Striker grants players a choice of distinct aerial sorcerers riding magical mounts, each wielding elemental projectiles that shift drastically based on color-coded crystal power-ups. Collecting red, blue, or green gems evolves your wizard's offensive spread—from homing fireballs and piercing lightning arcs to wide-coverage wind blades. Players also possess a limited stock of screen-clearing "Bomb" spells that summon colossal mythological entities, such as a ferocious dragon or a divine titan, to obliterate enemy formations on the screen. The game spans six stages of intense bullet-hell dodging, culminating in chaotic boss battles against colossal golems and dark sorcerers.
