Description
Space Dungeon was produced by Taito in 1981.
Space Dungeon is an arcade style shooter. You control a spaceship within the space dungeon which consists of numerous rooms. Located throughout are treasures, and your goal is to collect as many of these treasures as you can and then proceed to the dungeons exit (called “collect bonus”). You don’t need to collect every treasure to complete a level, but more bonus points are earned the more treasures you collect. Many of the rooms contain dangerous enemies, including death squares, guards, enforcers, pikers, and more. To fight off the enemies, your spaceship is equipped with a laser which can fire in eight different directions. To help find your way around, a map at the top of the screen will indicate where you are, where you’ve been, and what rooms visited so far still have enemies in them. Also located in the dungeons is a thief; the thief has the same goal as you, and will try to steal the treasures before you can. The thief can’t be destroyed, but shooting it will cause it to drop any treasures it may be carrying. If you lose a spaceship at any point by crashing into an enemy or enemy fire, you will be sent back to the starting location and all the treasure you were carrying will be left in the room where you died. The game ends when you have lost all of your reserve spaceships.
Space Dungeon
Overview & History
Released in 1981 by Taito, Space Dungeon is a rare and delightfully frantic twin-stick arcade masterpiece that synthesized the maze-crawling dread of early dungeon RPGs with the breathless kinetic energy of deep-space combat. Designed by Tomohiro Nishikado—the legendary mind behind Space Invaders—the game tasked players with navigating a perilous, gridded labyrinth ruled by metallic menaces and biological abominations. Unlike its contemporaries that forced players into a single scrolling screen, Space Dungeon divided its terrifying arenas into multiple interconnected rooms, demanding aggressive exploration, rapid risk-assessment, and ruthless treasure collection. While it never achieved the ubiquitous cultural footprint of Taito's earlier works, its punishing difficulty curve and innovative dual-lever control scheme earned it a fiercely loyal cult following among hardcore arcade purists.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Players pilot a heavily armed reconnaissance ship trapped inside a sprawling grid of alien-infested chambers. The core objective is twofold: systematically raid the dungeons for high-value hidden treasures (like crystals and crowns) and successfully escape through the designated exit room before your shields disintegrate. What makes the game uniquely thrilling is its dual-directional gameplay mechanic: your ship can move in one direction while firing independently in another, allowing for desperate strafing runs down tight corridors. The environment itself is fraught with peril, featuring deadly automated lasers, security forcefields, and aggressive roving guards like the bouncing "Thief" enemies who snatch your hard-earned loot. Every successful dungeon clear ramps up the speed and density of the traps, punishing hesitation and rewarding spatial memory.
