Description

2039 A.D. Man begins deep space exploration in search of new life forms and usable fuel sources. What he discovers is trouble.

Until now, the success of past explorations was causing the space effort to grow by leaps and bounds. Until now, the explorers had found little more than fungus and small insects as alternative lifeforms. Until now, the chief dangers had been those posed by the hostile environment of space. Until now, the aliens had not known about THEM.

On the ragged edge of the galaxy, other creatures that roam the stars discover humans and spaceships to be excellent sources of food and other resources. Prepared at the worst for clashes with rival exploration teams, the human crews can do little to defend themselves as wave upon wave of nightmare creatures descend upon their ships and bases.

In response to their distress calls, the Federation has assembled a series of rescue teams, lead by their best military sharpshooters, to deal with the alien menace. As the leader of one of these teams, you must gun down the intruders and pick up the human survivors. Brave the maze of dark corridors that may lead to a deadly shootout between you and legions of monsters. Pick up survivors and extra ammo on the way.

Space Gun

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1990, Space Gun is a sci-fi horror rail-shooter that cashed in on the cosmic dread popularized by films like Aliens. Dropping players onto a derelict, bio-infested space station overrun by grotesque extraterrestrial horrors and rogue security droids, your mission is to rescue surviving crew members and obliterate the alien queen. Utilizing Taito's signature cabinet design featuring mounted, force-feedback plastic blasters, the game stood out in arcades for its grim atmosphere, chunky sprite scaling, and unapologetic B-movie gore. Unlike standard light-gun games of the era, it introduced a branching pathway system and interactive civilian rescues, adding surprising strategic depth to the coin-munching mayhem.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players traverse dimly lit corridors from a first-person perspective, blasting swarms of multi-limbed xenomorphs, face-hugger lookalikes, and mutated scientists. The game's standout mechanic is its arsenal of upgradeable weaponry—ranging from standard lasers and flamethrowers to the devastating "Vacuum Gun" and "Homing Missiles"—which can be picked up by shooting supply crates. Ammunition is limited for special weapons, forcing tactical trigger discipline. Additionally, players must carefully aim around frantic human survivors; shooting a civilian deducts vital health. Boss encounters demand concentrated fire on glowing weak points while dodging projectile barrages, culminating in a tense, claustrophobic showdown against the station's biological masterminds.
