Description

The arcade sequel to Spelunker that closely retains the game mechanics and style of the first arcade game: a descent into a perilous underworld, this time greenish instead of an earthly brown, populated by strange denizens and even stranger traps and hazards. As you proceed towards the unknown depths of the mine shaft, there will be plenty of platform jumping, rope climbing, dynamite blasting, key hunting, ghost-busting and other routine speleological activities. Naturally, there’s no shortage of treasure and bonus items, and the path to the exit isn’t always obvious, which will have you hunting for secret passages and seeking creative ways to modify the environment.

Released by Irem in 1987, Spelunker II: 23 no Kagi (The 23 Keys) is the fascinating, lesser-known arcade sequel to the notoriously unforgiving platformer Spelunker. Departing from the claustrophobic, pitch-black underground cave systems of the original game, this sequel thrusts our intrepid adventurer into a sprawling, multi-tiered ancient Egyptian ruin. Tasked with gathering twenty-three mystical keys to unlock ultimate salvation, the protagonist swaps simple subterranean exploration for a vibrant, trap-laden archaeological expedition filled with sliding stone blocks, venomous snakes, ghosts, and collapsing floors. While the original Famicom and home computer ports of the first game achieved legendary status, this true arcade follow-up refined the hardware capabilities of its era, delivering brighter sprites, more complex stage geometry, and an entirely reimagined gameplay loop that blended precision platforming with light action-RPG elements.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike its predecessor where a mere pixel-length fall spelled instant death, Spelunker II introduces a more forgiving health and inventory system. Players can now collect weapons like a whip or magical projectiles to dispatch persistent subterranean creatures, alongside ropes and ladders to navigate the vertical labyrinth. The core mechanic revolves around exploration and puzzle-solving: players must meticulously hunt down all 23 keys scattered across labyrinthine single-screen and scrolling chambers to unlock the passage to the next zone. Environmental hazards demand absolute mastery of momentum, as jumping over bottomless pits, timing movements around crushing pendulums, and managing a rapidly depleting oxygen/stamina gauge dictate success. Secret rooms, hidden treasure chests, and upgradeable equipment hidden deep within the tombs add a rewarding layer of replayability, setting it apart from standard linear quarter-eaters of the late '80s.
