Description

A very important professor and his daughter have been kidnapped by terrorists and it is up to you and a friend to play as Garcia and Cliff to rescue them. The game is a 1st person perspective rail-shooter where you use a gun to shoot wave after waves of baddies trying to kill you. The game forces you to follow a set path and will scroll in various directions and also stop to allow you to destroy a wave of baddies. There are various types of baddies from foot soldiers to huge flying robots. As well as infinite bullets you also have a limited supply of missiles which destroy everything on screen, but be careful not to shoot ordinary civilians as they will lose part of your energy bar which also decreases when hit by bullets and missiles. When your energy bar is empty then it’s game over but you can continue where you last died. At the end of a stage you face a end of stage baddy who requires multiple shots to destroy.

Steel Gunner

Overview & History

Released by Namco in 1991, Steel Gunner is a pioneering first-person sci-fi light gun arcade game that immersed players in a gritty, robotic dystopia. Running on Namco System 2 hardware, it carved out a unique niche distinct from traditional military shooters of its era by tasking players with piloting massive, heavily armed exoskeleton mechs. Set in the year 2088, the storyline follows elite mercenaries piloting the titular "Steel Gunners" to quell an aggressive, rogue artificial intelligence and its mechanized army that have seized control of a sprawling metropolis. Its sequel, Steel Gunner 2, followed a year later, but the original stands out for establishing the coin-op trend of hydraulic-feeling, seated cabinet shooters with heavy environmental destruction.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard target-shooting galleries, Steel Gunner utilizes a dual-axis aiming reticle controlled via a heavy machine-gun peripheral, allowing players to independently aim their vulcan cannon and secondary ordnance. Stages are viewed from a first-person perspective inside the cockpit, creating a high-tension atmosphere as waves of biomechanical walkers, hovering drones, and heavily armored tanks flood the screen. Destructible environments are a core mechanic; players can obliterate building facades, concrete barriers, and street furniture to unearth hidden power-ups, extra armor, and high-scoring enemy components. Players possess a health bar rather than a single-hit-death rule, sustained by collecting repair kits dropped by downed bosses or specific structural ruins. The game also features a special secondary weapon system—typically a barrage of homing missiles or grenades—that requires precise timing to clear screen-filling bullet hell patterns generated by screen-dominating boss units.
