Description

Storm Blade was produced by Visco Corporation in 1996.

Storm Blade is a military themed vertical scrolling shoot ’em up game where you take control of either Lucky J. Striker in his F14 Tomcat, Alex in his MiG-29 Fulcrum, Camel Yuki Anderson in her AV-BB Harrier II or old man Isoroku Kaionji in his Zero Fighter Kamikaze Special. Each with their own weapons patrons.

As you make progress and fight of various planes, helicopters, tanks, static guns, ships and bosses power-ups come available. Power-ups cans can be collected from destroyed enemies and increase your firepower. These come in two forms: a normal power-up (P) and a super power-up (F). There are also a limited number of super bombs available that do a vast amount of damage. Destroyed enemies sometimes drop additional super bombs (B). The game can be played solo or with a friend.

Storm Blade

Overview & History

Released into the competitive arcade circuit during the height of the 1990s hack-and-slash boom, Storm Blade carved out a fierce reputation for its high-octane fantasy combat and relentless difficulty. Developed as a quarter-munching cooperative beat-'em-up, the game transports players to the war-torn continent of Aethelgard. The storyline follows a disgraced royal knight and an exiled elemental sorceress who must reclaim the stolen 'Blade of Gales'—a legendary artifact capable of summoning apocalyptic tempests—from the tyrannical warlord Malakor and his demonic legions. Unlike many of its contemporaries that relied solely on gritty realism or sci-fi tropes, Storm Blade integrated vibrant, high-contrast sprite art with sweeping orchestral chiptunes, making every cabinet a visual and auditory spectacle in smoke-filled arcades.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop alternates between frantic crowd-control skirmishes and grueling one-on-one boss duels across five diverse stages, ranging from crumbling obsidian citadels to raging ocean leviathans. Players can choose between two distinct fighters: Varis, a heavy-hitting berserker wielding a colossal broadsword, and Lyra, an agile spellblade who combines rapid dagger strikes with area-of-effect lightning magic. Combat mechanics go beyond simple button-mashing by introducing a combo-meter system; successfully chaining normal attacks without taking damage builds up 'Storm Energy,' which can be unleashed as a screen-clearing tempest attack. Environmental hazards, destructible barricades, and scattered throwable weapons add tactical depth to every encounter, demanding precise positioning and quick reflexes to survive.
