This is the follow-up to Street Fighter III: New Generation . The brothers Yun and Yang are now truly separate characters with different moves, the demonic Akuma known from previous Street Fighter installments returns (though not as regular part of the roster), and two other new characters are introduced:
– Hugo. A big professional wrestler. His roots lie actually in the Final Fight series.
– Urien. The brother of the boss character, Gill. Urien’s appearance and moves resemble him. While Gill manipulates powers of ice and fire, Urien wields lightning and has the ability to make his body metallic.

There are also some notable additions in terms of gameplay. A player can now perform EX Specials, which are powered up versions of the moves at the cost of a reduced Super Art gauge. It’s possible to escape from a throwing attack, and a “Personal Action” grants characters specific benefits (Alex receives more attack power for example). Furthermore, there is now a bonus round which tests the parrying skill of the player, as Sean throws basketballs towards him which can be deflected

Released by Capcom in 1997 for the CP System III arcade hardware, Street Fighter III 2nd Impact: Giant Attack served as the vital sophomore evolution of the divisive third mainline iteration. Escaping the immense shadow cast by Street Fighter II, this sequel doubled down on the series' pivot toward fluid, hand-drawn sprite animation and high-fidelity jazz-fusion audio. While the original New Generation introduced a largely unfamiliar roster, 2nd Impact answered fan demands by reinstating series icons Akuma and Hugo (alongside his diminutive manager Poison), while introducing the deadly master of the Ansatsuken arts, Dudley. The storyline advances the shadowy machinations of the Illuminati and its enigmatic leader, Gill, who seeks to cleanse the earth via a global tournament. Though eventually overshadowed by its legendary successor, *3rd Strike*, 2nd Impact solidified the foundations of the sub-series by refining the pacing, adding exclusive new stages, and introducing the chaotic stage-specific hazards that gave the arenas intense atmospheric life.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, 2nd Impact builds upon the revolutionary mechanics established in the original title while adding critical offensive layers. The signature Parry system—executed by tapping forward or down just as an opponent’s attack connects without using the block button—returns with tighter frames, rewarding risk-taking players with massive counter-attack opportunities. The game also introduces **EX Specials**, allowing fighters to consume a portion of their Super Art gauge to execute enhanced, glowing versions of their standard special moves with added frames of invincibility or multi-hit properties. Another major mechanical addition is the Personal Action (taunt), which now serves a tactical purpose; depending on the character, executing a full taunt grants measurable attributes such as increased attack power, slight health recovery, or lowered defense. Players choose one of three distinct Super Arts before the match, granting massive strategic depth as you balance meter management between defensive EX moves and game-ending supers. Hugo's devastating giant-swing command throws, Dudley's punishing Rolling Thunder juggles, and Alex's bone-crushing Boomerang Raid highlight the game's diverse, heavily physics-influenced combo architecture.
