The third in Sega’s After Burner arcade flight sim series, Strike Fighter takes you back to the cockpit of the F-14 Tomcat in order to take on as many terrorist airplanes as you can with your arsenal of sidewinder missiles and your trusty vulcan cannon.

The title is actually a port of SEGA’s arcade fight-sim Strike Fighter, a Japan-only arcade release that attempted to mix the sim “lite” gameplay of G-Loc Air Battle with After Burner’s arcade gimmicks. As such, the game features the ability to play both in the cockpit as well as in the classic third person perspective. Both night and day scenarios are now available, with mission objectives that include new air-ground strikes.

Includes 3 gameplay modes: Arcade, Timed and “Hits” which measures how many enemies you can shoot down in specific waves. No multiplayer support available.

Released by Atari in 1991, Strike Fighter is a gritty, near-future arcade scrolling shooter that thrusts players into the cockpit of advanced, highly maneuverable jet fighters. Departing from the whimsical space battles of contemporary shooters, this title grounded its combat in high-stakes geopolitical conflict, tasking pilots with dismantling a rogue military regime across hostile urban, oceanic, and mountainous landscapes. Known for its distinct pseudo-3D perspective and booming FM synthesis soundtrack, the game gained a cult following in smoke-filled arcades for its unforgiving difficulty and intense cooperative two-player mode.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Strike Fighter utilizes a dynamic depth-scrolling mechanic, allowing players to pitch their aircraft up and down to engage targets at varying altitudes while dodging incoming surface-to-air missiles and enemy fighter squadrons. Unlike traditional flat shoot-'em-ups, positioning is critical; players must constantly manage their throttle to outmaneuver threats or drop behind elusive aces. The armory features a versatile payload system, letting pilots switch between standard machine guns for swarming drones and lock-on missiles for armored ground installations. Power-ups scattered across hostile territory grant temporary invincibility, cluster bombs, and hyper-velocity wing lasers, all essential for surviving the relentless, multi-tiered boss encounters that cap off each grueling theater of war.
