Super High Impact

Overview & History

Released by Midway in 1991, Super High Impact brought the over-the-top, adrenaline-fueled arcade football formula pioneered by its predecessor, High Impact, to a new level of gridiron chaos. Abandoning strict simulation in favor of blistering arcade action, the game eschewed standard 11-on-11 rules for a fast-paced 7-on-7 format, focusing heavily on brutal hits, exaggerated animations, and fast scoring drives. Designed by the legendary team of Eugene Jarvis and Mark Turmell, this coin-op classic captured the early-90s arcade zeitgeist by allowing players to pull off illegal maneuvers and bone-crushing tackles without referee interference, cementing its legacy as a quintessential multiplayer party game.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional football titles, Super High Impact relies on a condensed playbook and arcade pacing where momentum dictates the flow of the match. Players choose from a selection of fictional city-based teams and battle through four quarters of relentless action. The game is infamous for its lack of penalties, enabling defenders to launch full-body flying tackles, clotheslines, and helmet-to-helmet collisions long after the whistle has blown. On offense, quarterbacks can unleash blazing-fast bullet passes or scramble out of the pocket, while receivers utilize speed bursts to break away from aggressive secondary coverage. Success requires mastering the timing of lateral pitches and recognizing when to avoid incoming defensive monsters who can literally knock your players unconscious.
