Description

Super Sprint is a racing game for one or two players, with the Arcade version allowing three players to race at the same time. Gameplay is from an overhead view of the racetrack. The racetracks start simple and gradually get more complicated, and may also feature obstacles ranging from traffic cones to tornadoes. Occasionally wrenches will appear in the roadway, and when collected they can be used after a race to power up your car with better tires, better acceleration or a higher top speed.

Super Sprint

Overview & History

Released by Atari Games in 1986, Super Sprint revolutionized the top-down racing genre by introducing simultaneous three-player action viewed from a fixed, single-screen perspective. Designed by Johny Lee, the game drops players onto vibrant, miniature circuit boards complete with hairpin turns, treacherous oil slicks, and opening drawbridges. Unlike its spiritual predecessor Sprint 2, this iteration introduced a dedicated steering wheel, a gas pedal, and a gear shifter, alongside the ability to collect wrenches to upgrade car acceleration, top speed, and traction between heats.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core objective is to survive and win a relentless series of multi-lap races against both rival human opponents and ruthless computer-controlled cars. The camera remains stationary, framing the entire track like a slot-car layout, which forces drivers to master split-second spatial awareness. Hazards dynamically alter the track environment; dropping into water or smashing into barriers stalls your vehicle, costing precious seconds. To level the playing field, last-place racers can collect wrenches scattered across the asphalt to permanently beef up their engine stats, ensuring dynamic comebacks. The inclusion of rotating, multi-lane tracks with alternating obstacles keeps the pacing frantic, rewarding precision cornering over raw throttle abuse.
