Description

Super Xevious was produced by Namco in 1984.

The player controls a fighter with guns and bombs that must infiltrate a highly defended area and destroy everything in sight. The overall goal is to destroy the motherships that pop up periodically.

Super Xevious takes place on Earth. An invading alien race has set up shop, and it’s up to the player to send ’em home. The game has a large number of different ground and air-based targets of either belligerent or non-belliegerent nature. In addition to the jumper-based difficulty levels, the game also adapts its difficulty to the player. If the player is successful against a type of attacker, an even deadlier type of attacker shows up to challenge the player.

The game play is very much like the original Xevious, but in this sequel, the play is a little more difficult. Several new enemies are introduced, including a silver Galaxian flagship, two jet planes, a helicopter, and a dark yellow tank.

Overview & History

Released by Namco in 1984 as a challenging follow-up to their seminal vertical-scrolling shooter, *Super Xevious* retains the atmospheric, biomechanical alien backdrop of the original while significantly ramping up the difficulty. Players pilot the Solvalou fighter craft on a desperate mission to liberate Earth from the remnants of the Garon empire and their biomechanical mothership, the Andover. While preserving the distinctive pre-rendered sprite aesthetic and mysterious lore of the 1982 predecessor, this updated iteration introduces brutal enemy configurations and hidden secrets designed specifically to torment seasoned arcade veterans.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard shmup titles, *Super Xevious* demands split-attention gameplay by dividing your offense into two distinct layers: the Zapper for airborne threats and the Blaster for ground targets. Navigating the sprawling terrain requires precision, as the crosshair must be manually positioned over shadow-canted installations, radar towers, and lurking subterranean tanks before dropping a bomb. The game is infamous for its deeply hidden gameplay loops, requiring players to hover over exact coordinates to unearth invisible Sol citadels for bonus points and temporary shielding. Enemies attack in ruthless, synchronized formations, and the inclusion of the dart-spitting Bacura obstacles—which are entirely indestructible—forces players to master tight evasion patterns alongside calculated target prioritization.
