Description

Syvalion is a shoot ’em up game in which you take control of a spaceship shaped as a dragon and divided in several segments. The spaceships/dragon can move freely across the screen in all directions and has to fight off robots, spaceships and bosses with his fire attack. When using the fire attack the fuel meter at the bottom off the screen depletes but moving around recharges the meter. Along the way are also indestructible obstacles that have to be evaded. The segments serve as hit points and when taking damage a segment changes color. The game features the following modes:

– Basic Series: A mode in witch you receive instruction and tips on how to play the game;
– Real Combat Series: A story mode;
– Time Attack: A mode where you need to gather as many points as possible before the time reaches zero.

The game was later also released as part of a compilation called Taito Legends 2 for the PlayStation 2.

Syvalion

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1988, Syvalion is a visually striking, physics-driven shoot 'em up that stands apart from standard arcade contemporaries of its era. Eschewing traditional spaceship tropes, players pilot the titular Syvalion, a magnificent, serpentine metallic dragon forged to liberate the planet Solaris from the tyrannical rule of the mechanical tyrant, Grand Titan. Utilizing Taito’s advanced Z80-based hardware, the game gained a cult following for its pseudo-3D perspective and groundbreaking fluid dynamics, capturing the sensation of slithering through perilous, cavernous labyrinths. Unlike linear arcade shooters of the late '80s, Syvalion emphasizes exploration, momentum, and environmental hazard navigation across its maze-like stages, making each playthrough a test of spatial awareness and precise kinetic control.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players must guide the flexible, multi-jointed metallic dragon through labyrinthine underground complexes filled with hostile automated defenses, crushing piston traps, and subterranean beasts. The core mechanic revolves around the dragon's body physics; your serpentine tail follows the path of your head with a realistic delay, requiring careful calculation when darting through narrow corridors or executing sharp turns. The Syvalion is equipped with a primary flame-breath attack that can be charged to unleash devastating plasma blasts capable of melting both enemies and destructible wall barriers. Throughout the winding mazes, players collect energy crystals to maintain their health bar, which constantly depletes against damage and time. As you delve deeper, the stages grow increasingly claustrophobic, demanding mastery over acceleration and deceleration to survive the relentless onslaught of mechanized horrors.

Keyboard Controls
