Description

During the final days of World War II, the allied forces sends special forces member Colonel Ralf to penetrate an enemy base and destroy a secret weapon by driving a new prototype tank.

This was the first appearance of Ralf Jones, protagonist of “Ikari Warriors”, and a fighter in “The King of Fighters ’94” and its sequels. Unlike Ikari and KOF games, which were set in modern times, T.N.K. III is set during World War II.

T.N.K III

Overview & History

Released by SNK in 1985, T.N.K III (known as Tank Battalion in Japan) is a seminal overhead run-and-gun arcade game that predates their iconic Neo Geo era. The storyline drops players into a gritty, near-future military conflict, taking command of the prototype armored fighting vehicle designated the T.N.K. III. Tasked with single-handedly breaching heavily fortified enemy lines, your mission is to demolish hostile tank divisions, infantry blockades, and massive boss installations across increasingly hostile terrain. As one of SNK's early breakout hits, it established the studio's penchant for explosive, high-difficulty arcade action and directly paved the way for later classics like Ikari Warriors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard foot-soldier shooters of its era, T.N.K III gives players direct control over a nimble, fully rotational tank equipped with a dual-action weapon system. You can drive in eight directions while independently aiming your turret to blast targets off-screen. Defensive strategy is vital: your tank features a limited armor meter that depletes upon enemy contact or shell impact, though you can pick up vital power-ups like speed boosts, shields, and weapon upgrades. A standout mechanic is the ability to temporarily abandon your tank to navigate narrow trenches on foot, dodging incoming fire before hijacking a fresh armored vehicle. The game ramps up the tension with a relentless auto-scrolling perspective, forcing aggressive forward momentum while dodging landmines, mortar shells, and barricades.
