The Lost Castle in Darkmist was produced by Taito in 1986.

A vertically scrolling beat ’em up game where the player controls a knight who battles against a variety of magical characters. Collect potions, power-ups and bonus items from the treasure chests left by slain enemies. Defeat the boss enemies to proceed to the next level.

Use the Sword button to swing the character’s weapon at enemies and their projectile attacks. When a treasure chest appears, you must first walk over it and then wait for the item to appear before it can be collected. Try to remain in the center of the screen and only fight enemies when necessary since the character’s health decreases rapidly when under attack.
In some areas, the screen scrolls quite rapidly so it is important to keep moving. If the character becomes trapped behind a wall as the screen scrolls, a life will be lost.

The game plays similar to Gun.Smoke except with a mythical fantasy theme.

Legend states that the monolithic fortress of Darkmist materialized overnight centuries ago, dragging the surrounding kingdom into an eternal twilight and trapping the souls of its denizens in shifting labyrinthine halls. Unlike typical hack-and-slash titles of its time, Darkmist combined tight platforming precision with a hauntingly melancholic gothic aesthetic, driven by a memorable chiptune soundtrack that emphasized the eerie isolation of the haunted corridors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay revolves around clearing multi-tiered rooms infested with restless spirits, gargoyles, and armored phantoms while managing a stamina meter that dictates both evasion and spellcasting. Players must master Alistair's diverse arsenal: a silver-plated broadsword for close-quarters combat, a heavy iron flail capable of shattering shielded foes, and a mystical lantern that reveals hidden platforms and weakens ethereal enemies. Boss encounters require strategic exploitation of environmental hazards, such as triggering ancient portcullises to crush towering stone golems. Progression relies on collecting shattered soul fragments dropped by fallen enemies, which can be spent at ancient shrines to permanently upgrade health pools or unlock elemental enchantments like frost-tipped strikes and lightning dashes.
