Description

Thunder Dragon 2 was produced by NMK in 1993.

A vertically scrolling shoot’em-up for 1 or 2 players (simultaneously)

The players control a crop duster plane or a more futuristic looking plane, both with propeller. There are 8 stages in total with a battle against an end boss (or as the game calls them “area guardian”) at the end of each stage. Enemies include standard planes, helicopters and tanks as well as more futuristic looking vehicles and space craft.

At the beginning of each stage a text “Battle is begun. Good luck” or “Stage 2” etc. appears. Players can actually shoot and destroy these letters for bonus points. Another notable feature is a non-English accented voice that will randomly blurt out phrases like “yeah man, let’s move on”, “get out of my sight” or “yeehaw” during the game.

Overview & History

Released in 1993 by NMK, Thunder Dragon 2 is a cult-classic vertical-scrolling arcade shoot 'em up that serves as the explosive sequel to the original 1991 title. While the first game was relatively straightforward, this installment ups the ante with a bizarre, post-apocalyptic sci-fi storyline featuring bio-mechanical terrors, mutated insectoids, and rogue military forces trying to subjugate the remnants of humanity. Operating on custom arcade hardware, the game gained a reputation in local arcades for its punishing difficulty, vibrant sprite scaling, and heavily detailed industrial backgrounds. Though it never achieved the mainstream household name status of Capcom's or Cave's legendary bullet-hell titles, Thunder Dragon 2 remains a cherished, adrenaline-fueled hidden gem for retro enthusiasts who appreciate relentless pacing and heavy metal-infused electronic soundtracks.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay revolves around intense vertical scrolling across six diverse stages, ranging from crumbling urban metropolises to subterranean cavern complexes. Players choose from a selection of distinct fighter ships, each boasting unique primary firing arcs, speed tiers, and screen-clearing special attacks (smart bombs) that summon devastating screen-wide ordnance. Collecting power-up items modifies your weapon spread, upgrading everything from wide-area plasma waves to concentrated laser beams. A standout mechanic is the aggressive enemy density; bosses are multi-tiered behemoths that constantly morph, shedding armor plates and shifting attack patterns. The scoring system heavily rewards aggressive play, encouraging players to risk positioning themselves dangerously close to mid-tier foes to farm point-multiplier items before they vanish off-screen.
