A side-scrolling, two-playe co-op, soldiers-n-enemies shoot-em-up with lots of weapons, vehicles, and at least one air combat sub-game.

In 19xx, the world is overtaken by a storm of terrorism, and the evil power of invasion extends over the land, sky, and sea. However, there are brave men fighting against it for putting down a storm. The anti-terrorism team of Thunder and Fox is called in to complete a series of missions, ranging from breaking through the enemy’s barrier and destroying their choppers, to destroying the enemy’s headquarters.

Walk through the levels and destroy enemies using your knife and defeat the end-of-level bosses. Various weapons are at your disposal, including flamethrowers, bazookas, machine guns, and grenades. You can also pistol-whip enemies as well. Smash open crates for 500 points, 1000 points, and extra life + 5000 points.

Released by Taito in 1990, Thunder Fox is a cult-classic arcade action platformer that blends the tactical infiltration of Rolling Thunder with the bombastic, vehicular combat of Ikari Warriors. Set against a backdrop of global terrorism, players assume the roles of elite operatives Thunder and Fox. Their mission is to infiltrate heavily fortified enemy strongholds spanning across naval battles, subterranean bases, and heavily guarded airspace to dismantle a rogue paramilitary syndicate. Unlike standard side-scrollers of its era, Taito incorporated massive cinematic set pieces, changing the fundamental flow of combat as players transition seamlessly from foot soldiers to vehicle pilots mid-operation.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay alternates between traditional run-and-gun platforming and high-speed vehicular warfare. Players begin on foot, armed with standard submachine guns and melee attacks, capable of scaling ledges, dodging localized hazards, and executing close-quarters combat maneuvers against varied enemy infantry. As the mission progresses, players hijack and operate distinct vehicles—including armored tanks, speedboats, and biplanes—each granting access to devastating heavy artillery, flamethrowers, or rapid-fire cannons capable of clearing the screen of hostile forces and massive end-of-stage boss mechs. Cooperative two-player functionality allows for synchronized tactics, creating chaotic battlefield synergy.
