Description

Thundercade, also known as Twin Formation and 特殊部隊UAG (Tokushu Butai U.A.G. “Special Forces U.A.G. (Un-Attached Grenadier))”, is a shoot ’em up video game developed by SETA and originally released for video arcades in 1987.

A nuclear powerplant has fallen into the hands of terrorists and you pilot a motorcyle equipped with machine guns that can be improved along the way. Make your way through difficult terrain and battle against loads of terrorists on foot, in cars, tanks and submarines who will try to stop you. Reach the plant and shoot all the terrorists to save the day.

Overview & History

Released in 1987 by SETA, Thundercade (also known in Japan as Twin Formation) is a military-themed vertical scrolling shoot 'em up that drops players into the chaotic heart of a fictional global conflict. You pilot an experimental, heavily armed combat vehicle known as the "R.V.F." (Remote Vehicle Force), tasked with single-handedly dismantling a heavily fortified terrorist organization occupying an island stronghold. Unlike standard jet-based shmups of the era, the ground-level vehicular perspective gives the game a gritty, tactical identity reminiscent of classic run-and-gun titles, while maintaining the relentless aerial and ground-based onslaught typical of arcade coin-ops. The game's distinct visual style, featuring destructible military installations, sprawling jungle terrain, and intense boss encounters, cemented its cult following among vintage arcade enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Thundercade differentiates itself from contemporaries through its signature "Twin Formation" mechanic. Players can deploy a secondary drone vehicle that dynamically links to the main buggy, expanding your firepower in various directional configurations depending on how you maneuver. The game utilizes a dual-attack system: a standard forward-firing machine gun to obliterate enemy infantry and barricades, and a vertical-dropping mortar or bomb arsenal designed to decimate stationary ground targets, bunkers, and turrets. Power-ups are scattered throughout the stages by destroying specific transport vehicles, upgrading your weapon spread, speed, and armor durability. Players must expertly weave the R.V.F. through dense bullet hell patterns, navigate narrow terrain bottlenecks, and survive punishing end-stage boss fights against armored trains, massive tanks, and heavily fortified coastal gun emplacements.
