Description

An axe-swinging monk jumps and hacks his way through four stages to rescue kidnapped children. Bosses must be battled at the half-way point and at each stage’s conclusion. Meet a master’s challenge in-between stages in order to gain power-ups.

Tiger Road is a beat ’em up in which you (as Lee Wong) must rescue the village children from the evil Ryo Ken Oh. Many levels are horizontally scrolling, although with high ledges to jump onto and follow for a slightly different path. Magic urns containing improved weapons appear frequently. Most enemies are easy to attack and only need one hit to kill, although they come at you in large hordes. Once you get to the indoor sections you will find big enemies with the ability to kill you with one hit, in sections set on multiple levels complete with stairways.

Tiger Road

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1987, Tiger Road (originally known in Japan as Tora e no Michi) is a dark fantasy side-scrolling platformer steeped in ancient Chinese folklore and martial arts lore. Players step into the traditional robes of Lee, a seasoned kung-fu master and monk on a perilous quest. The supreme ruler of the demons, the tyrannical Ryuou, has kidnapped the young disciples of the temple. It is up to Lee to traverse five treacherous stages—ranging from dense bamboo forests and cavernous mountains to the heavily guarded gates of the demon castle—to rescue the children and restore peace. Combining Capcom's signature arcade action with RPG-lite mechanics, the game carved out a distinct identity amidst the crowded 1980s beat-'em-up landscape.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Tiger Road departs from standard brawlers by integrating vertical platforming with relentless melee combat. Lee begins his journey armed with a traditional Chinese staff, but players can collect currency dropped by defeated enemies to purchase devastating weapon upgrades like the iron ball and chain, or the massive battle axe. Health is represented by a traditional life bar, but survival requires more than just button-mashing; players must master the crouch, high jump, and precise aerial strikes to bypass environmental hazards and flying demons. Scattered throughout the stages are hidden portals leading to bonus training rooms, where Lee can test his reflexes against waves of enemies to earn extra health, power-ups, or vital defensive armor upgrades. The challenge is notoriously punishing, demanding memorization of enemy spawn patterns and boss attack rhythms to achieve victory.
