Description

Top Speed, also known as Full Throttle, is a point-to-point racing game in which the player drives a Mazda RX-7 and must reach each stage’s end-of-level checkpoint before the time limit expires to progress to the next stage.

The car is equipped with a limited number of nitro boosts that gives the car a temporary burst of speed when engaged. Forked junctions appear mid-way through each stage, allowing players to choose which route they wish to take.

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1987 as the spiritual successor to Continental Circus, Top Speed is a classic arcade racing game that drops players into the chaotic night streets of the United States. Spanning a frantic cross-country route from the neon-lit alleys of Las Vegas all the way to the towering skyline of New York City, the game challenges drivers to outrun both rival racers and aggressive local law enforcement against a strict, rapidly ticking countdown timer. Distinct for its vibrant sprite scaling and scaling-vector hybrid aesthetics, it remains a beloved relic of late-80s arcade culture.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard racers of its era, Top Speed incorporates aggressive combat-racing mechanics. Players must dodge civilian traffic, navigate treacherous sharp turns, and actively ram or sideswipe rival street racers to clear their path. The core mechanic revolves around maintaining momentum while exploiting the drafting system. As you progress through checkpoints, the game shifts environments from urban sprawls to winding rural highways, forcing constant adaptation. A signature high-risk feature is the turbo-boost mechanism, which grants blazing acceleration at the cost of steering precision, often leading to spectacular, screen-shaking crashes if mismanaged.
