Description

Touki Denshou: Angel Eyes is an all-girl fighting arcade game, released by Tecmo in 1996. As Tecmo’s first arcade fighting game, it suffers from severe balance issues where a single combo can completely drain a character’s health. Since the game features a significant amount of aerial combat and unblockable juggle combos, a match will often be determined by which player strikes first.

Toukidenshou: Angel Eyes

Overview & History

Developed by tamTam and published by Psikyo in 1996, Toukidenshou: Angel Eyes is a cult-classic, all-female 2D fighting game for the SNK Neo Geo MVS arcade hardware. Set in a near-future cyberpunk metropolis, the narrative centers around the "Angel Project," a sinister military conspiracy aimed at harnessing superhuman psychic phenomena through cybernetic implants and genetic augmentation. Players select from a diverse roster of mechanically enhanced heroines—ranging from rogue bio-androids and ninja assassins to high-tech vigilantes—each fighting to uncover the truth behind the corporation's bio-weapon experiments or settle personal vendettas. While it initially flew under the radar compared to heavyweight fighters of the era, the game has since earned a devoted following for its striking anime aesthetic, frantic pacing, and surprisingly deep combo systems that push the arcade board to its technical limits.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional 2D fighters of the mid-90s, Angel Eyes differentiates itself with a hyper-mobile, aerial-centric combat engine. The game utilizes a four-button layout consisting of Weak Attack, Strong Attack, Jump, and a dedicated Dash/Evade button. Characters can execute lightning-fast air dashes, double jumps, and mid-air chain combos, turning skirmishes into high-flying vertical ballet. A standout mechanic is the "Angel Gauge," which fills as players deal or receive damage. Once full, it allows characters to unleash devastating cinematic Super Moves or enter a temporary "Overdrive" state that boosts speed and unlocks infinite special move cancels. Roster highlights include the cyber-ninja Kagura, whose teleportation strikes cross up opponents instantly, and the heavy-artillery specialist Rita, who dominates ground space with screen-filling plasma mortars. Managing recovery frames and utilizing tactical aerial blocking are absolute prerequisites for surviving the relentless computer AI and competitive human opponents.
