Description

Trio The Punch: Never Forget Me… is a side-scrolling action game. At the outset players can choose to play as one of three characters; Santos, Kamakura-kun, and Rosesub. Santos uses a sandbag and iron claw, Kamakura-kun uses throwing knives and shurikens, and Rosesub uses a torch, sword, and a morning star as weapons.

The goal in each stage is to defeat enemies until the player collects enough dropped enemy hearts which will make the stage boss appear. In between stages, players try their luck at a lottery and can win prizes such as earning an extra life.

Trio The Punch: Never Forget Me...

Overview & History

Released by Data East in 1990 for Japanese arcades, Trio The Punch: Never Forget Me... is a legendary, fever-dream beat 'em up that stands as one of the most bizarre and eccentric titles in gaming history. Conceived during the golden era of arcade gaming, the game unapologetically abandons standard action tropes in favor of surreal Japanese humor, pop-culture parody, and chaotic multiplayer action. Players choose from three distinctly weird protagonists—Gentleman (a tuxedo-wearing brute), Ninja (a masked acrobat), and Tank (a heavy-set brawler)—on a psychedelic quest to rescue a kidnapped princess from a supernatural cult and their bizarre minions. Due to its niche appeal and wonderfully unhinged aesthetic, it remains a coveted cult classic among retro enthusiasts who appreciate arcade oddities.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, Trio The Punch is a side-scrolling brawler, but it subverts expectations at every turn through its manic mechanics and surreal power-ups. Players navigate bizarre stages filled with bizarre enemies, utilizing standard punches and kicks alongside utterly ridiculous special abilities. Hitting specific glowing objects or enemies triggers transformative power-ups, turning your character into a soaring bird, a bouncing ball, or even temporarily altering the game's perspective into abstract bonus stages. Defeated enemies often drop food items that can either heal you or drastically alter your character's size and speed. The game also features chaotic 3-player cooperative chaos, allowing friends to unleash synchronized screen-clearing attacks that fill the display with flashing neon lights, exploding chickens, and surreal Japanese text.
