Description

Trojan (闘いの挽歌 Tatakai no Banka, lit. “Requiem for Battle”) is a scrolling six-level post-apocalyptic beat-em-up.

The oppressed people of the world call upon you to bring peace to the unsettled land. Battle through six levels where you must use a sword and shield to attack enemies and defend yourself against the evil king’s troops.

The world is ruled by a vicious warlord named Achiless and his henchmen. You are Ryu, the master of martial arts and sword-fighting, who has decided that a confrontation with Achilles is in order to bring peace and order back to the world. Your character is equipped with both a sword (for offense) and a shield (for defense). You will go through six stages starting at a ruined city, each with two boss characters (in the middle and at the end). Some enemies are so powerful that you will die the instant you fail to block. You also have to race against time as well, which makes the game that much more difficult.

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1986, Trojan is a post-apocalyptic side-scrolling hack-and-slash arcade game that blends ancient Greek mythology with a gritty, nuclear-wasted future. Set in a dystopian world where survivors scavenge the ruins of civilization, players control a lone warrior tasked with infiltrating the heavily fortified underground domain of the evil ruler Achilleus and his mutant army. Capcom's arcade classic stands out for its deliberate pacing and strategic melee combat, later paving the way for the developer's legendary run of fantasy action titles.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players traverse gritty urban ruins and caverns wielding a bronze short sword and a iconic translucent shield. The defensive shield is the game's defining mechanic: holding the joystick down or letting go positions the shield to deflect incoming enemy projectiles, fireballs, and thrown weapons. Throughout the stages, players collect power-up crystals that extend the health meter or temporarily upgrade the sword into a sweeping fire blade. Combat requires careful timing rather than button-mashing, as leaping over low-crouching mutants and managing tight platforming gaps are just as vital as defeating aggressive end-level bosses like the armored brute. The atmosphere is further elevated by a pulsing, atmospheric chiptune soundtrack that underscores the bleak setting.
