Description

Turbo OutRun is an arcade sequel to OutRun released in 1989. Though not the first sequel to OutRun, Turbo OutRun is considered to be the first “true” sequel, having been built by a similar team at Sega AM2 with the arcades in mind.

Turbo OutRun has the player make a journey across the United States of America, from New York to Los Angeles. It is a more linear game than its predecessor, offering no forks in the road and therefore less of an incentive to play the game again after completion.

Turbo Out Run

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1989 as the true arcade sequel to their monumental 1986 hit OutRun, Turbo Out Run swapped the leisurely European scenic cruise for a high-stakes, coast-to-coast American road race. Players step into the shoes of the iconic blonde driver, accompanied by his perennial passenger, tasked with racing a modified Ferrari F40 from New York City all the way to Los Angeles. Unlike its predecessor, which featured branching paths leading to multiple endings, Turbo Out Run streamlined the journey into a linear, relentless 16-stage sprint across changing terrains and treacherous weather conditions, all while racing against a ruthless rival in a Porsche 959.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Departing from the original game's checkpoint timer, this sequel introduces a dynamic upgrade system and a dedicated turbo boost mechanic. At the end of every fourth stage, players are given the chance to upgrade their Ferrari F40, choosing between superior engine power, improved tire grip, or enhanced turbo endurance. The core mechanic relies on managing your standard acceleration alongside a limited-use Turbo Boost—activated via a dedicated button—which rockets you past dense civilian traffic at blistering speeds, though excessive use risks engine overheating. Furthermore, players must contend with unpredictable weather events like sudden rainstorms that severely impact traction, and periodic police roadblocks that require sharp steering to breach. Successfully reaching Los Angeles within the strict time limit triggers a dramatic cinematic showdown against the rival driver.
