Ultra Toukon Densetsu

Overview & History

Released exclusively for Japanese arcades in 1993 by Banpresto, Ultra Toukon Densetsu (translated as "Ultra Fighting Legend") is a fascinating, ultra-rare 2D fighting game built upon the legendary legacy of Tsuburaya Productions' Ultraman franchise. Eschewing the traditional arcade sprite-based beat 'em up format common for tokusatsu properties at the time, Banpresto opted for a digitized-sprite fighting game engine heavily inspired by Midway’s Mortal Kombat. The game immerses players in the sprawling lore of the Ultra Series, chronicling a cinematic battle royal where iconic heroic giants and terrifying alien kaiju clash across desolate cityscapes and otherworldly planets. Though it remained trapped in arcade obscurity and never received a home console port, it stands out as a unique relic of early-90s digitized fighting game experimentation.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Ultra Toukon Densetsu utilizes a distinct 1v1 fighting system featuring digitized actors in rubber monster suits and spandex hero outfits, giving it an authentic yet campy tokusatsu aesthetic. Players choose from a roster of iconic Ultraman warriors and formidable foes like Baltan, Zetton, and Gomora. Combat revolves around standard striking, low and high kicks, and throws, but the true depth emerges from the signature special move system. Every character has a gauge that fills during combat, allowing them to unleash devastating energy beams, teleportation strikes, and iconic cinematic finishers—such as Ultraman’s Specium Ray. The stages are filled with destructible buildings that crumble when combatants are knocked into them, heightening the scale of fighting as colossal titans. The game is notoriously difficult, requiring precise timing to block heavy monster attacks and exploit opponent recovery frames in true coin-guzzling arcade fashion.
