Description

The first player controls the eponymous Valkyrie who is not an actual Valkyrie from Norse mythology, but a warrior maiden from the heavens who happens to be named after them, while the second player controls Kurino Sandra, a green lizard who, despite his name, is actually male. They must fight their way through eight multi-scrolling stages by firing shots from their sword (Valkyrie) and trident (Sandra) – and most of the enemies will leave gold coins or magic bubbles behind when killed, which can be exchanged for special items with Babasama (an old male sorcerer), and Zoul (a travelling salesman who shall draw Valkyrie and Sandra into his realm when they walk up to him, and his full name is also “Zouli Zurukobicchi Kozuruinen”).

To answer the Nazonazo Phantom and Sphinmoth’s questions on the fourth and seventh stages, a knowledge of the two Japanese syllabic writing systems (Hiragana and Katakana) is also essential; if a player does not know, they can only guess. Also, if a player wants Babasama to teach them the “Chameleon” spell on the fifth stage, they shall have to walk up to a woman in one of the previous stage’s interior areas, and speak to her so that she will give them a letter – without it, they cannot give it to Babasama, and he will not teach them the spell as a result.

Valkyrie No Densetsu

Overview & History

Released by Namco in 1989 for the System 2 arcade board, Valkyrie No Densetsu (The Legend of Valkyrie) is a masterclass in isometric action-roleplaying design. Serving as the sequel to the PC Engine cult-classic Valkyrie no Bōken, this arcade iteration traded the original's top-down grid-based exploration for breathtaking, fluid 16-bit sprite scaling and vibrant fantasy vistas. The narrative follows the titular heroine, the golden-winged warrior Valkyrie, and her diminutive lizard-like companion, Sandra, as they embark on a perilous quest across a mythical Norse-inspired world to restore the shattered Golden Seed and save the realm from the wicked deity Kamuro.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear run-and-gun titles, Valkyrie No Densetsu blends fast-paced arcade shooting with light RPG elements. Players traverse vertically scrolling isometric stages, battling goblins, griffins, and elemental bosses. Valkyrie wields a magical halberd that fires projectile energy bolts, while her cooperative second player, Sandra, uses bombs for heavy explosive damage. Throughout the stages, players collect gold coins dropped by defeated foes to purchase upgrades from wandering merchants—such as increased health, elemental magic spells, and temporary speed boots. Platforming precision is just as vital as combat; players must carefully time their jumps across floating islands and shifting terrain while managing an innovative magic meter that unleashes devastating screen-clearing elemental summons like lightning and tidal waves.
