Description

Choose one of three different planes to save New York in this vertical shooter with weapon power-ups.

A great shooter in all respects because of the driving rock soundtrack, multiple scroll speeds and good use of parallax scrolling. There is also a genuine feeling of being challenged but never overwhelmed.

The game scrolls at various speeds forwards and even backwards while fighting the end-of-level bosses. Shooting certain enemies releases power-ups and bonuses. There are different main weapon systems such as rapid-firing guns, lasers, bombs etc. that give the game a limited strategy. Certain levels and sections are easier complete with particular weapons.

Vapor Trail: Hyper Offence Formation

Overview & History

Released by Data East in 1989 for Japanese arcades, Vapor Trail: Hyper Offence Formation is a blistering, military-themed vertical scrolling shoot-'em-up. Set in a near-future timeline, the global defense forces must deploy an experimental squadron of advanced fighter craft to dismantle the rogue robotic empire known as Kadom, which has launched a surprise assault on humanity. Unlike many contemporary shmup releases of the late eighties, Vapor Trail stands out for its striking pseudo-3D scaling effects during boss entrances and its distinct industrial aesthetic, later serving as a conceptual stepping stone for Data East's renowned Kyukyoku Tiger-inspired titles and subsequent arcade shooters.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Vapor Trail differentiates itself from standard arcade shooters through its strategic pre-mission selection of fighter jets. Before launching into the fray, players can choose between three distinct aircraft: the speed-oriented Vigilante, the balanced Sylph, and the heavy-firepower Ghost Slug. Each craft possesses a unique weapon loadout—ranging from wide-spread plasma bursts to focused homing missiles—that can be upgraded by collecting power-up crystals dropped by enemy formations. Furthermore, players possess a limited-use smart bomb attack that unleashes a screen-clearing barrage of heavy ordnance, essential for surviving the relentless bullet-hell patterns thrown by massive, multi-tiered mechanical bosses.
