Description

Vasara was produced by Visco Games in 2000.

A vertical shooter from Visco that has a Japanese shogun theme.

Vasara uses a two-button system for attacking. The first, and primary attack involves rapidly pressing the first button which will fire the normal bullets. Each character also has a melee attack that can be used by holding the button down. The melee attack will not only damage an enemy, but will also deflect any bullets in the way.

The second button is used to deploy a bomb which will clear the screen of small enemies and do damage to the larger ones.

The Full Vasara Meter
The Full Vasara Meter
The third method of attack uses a meter called the “Vasara” meter. Once the Vasara meter is full it can be used by holding down the primary attack button for a small amount of time and them released. The Vasara attack is a larger version of the melee attack which does large amounts of damage. The Vasara meter can be replenished by collecting various items dropped by the enemies such as red jewels.

Vasara

Overview & History

Developed and published by Visco in 2000, Vasara is a cult-classic vertical-scrolling arcade bullet hell shooter that boldly reimagines Japan's Sengoku period through a sci-fi steampunk lens. Set in an alternate 16th century where feudal warlords pilot towering, heavily armed mechs and anti-gravity armor, the game draws heavily from Japanese historical figures like Oda Nobunaga and Takeda Shingen. Released near the twilight of the classic 2D coin-op era, Vasara stands out for its unique melee-centric mechanics, blending frantic projectile dodging with up-close samurai sword combat.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional shoot-'em-ups that rely purely on ranged firepower, Vasara introduces a dynamic close-combat system. Players choose from three distinct historical heroes: the iconic Oda Nobunaga piloting a nimble flyer, the fierce Takeda Shingen in heavy armor, or the skilled female warrior Saika Magoichi. Each character wields a standard ranged projectile attack alongside a devastating close-range melee slash that inflicts massive damage to bosses and clears tight bullet formations. Defeating glowing enemies fills the Vasara gauge, enabling screen-clearing special attacks fueled by historical tactical summons. The game features branching stages, allowing players to navigate alternate routes across war-torn provinces while dodging dense, hypnotic patterns of enemy ordnance across six intense stages.
