Description

Vasara 2 was produced by Visco Games in 2001.

The sequel to the great vertical shooter Vasara.

Vasara 2 is a 2D arcade shoot-’em-up in bullet hell/danmaku style, and a sequel to Vasara. Like in the first game, the action takes place in alternate Japan (science fantasy + Sengoku period), and Oda Nobunaga is the main enemy. The player can select one from four characters: Takeda Nobukatsu, Momochi Sandayu, Seiryubo and Akechi Mitsuhide (there’s also one hidden character, Saika Magoichi).

Game’s danmaku style is simple – fly forward, shoot enemies, collect points and weapon’s upgrade, dodge myriad bullets and defeat giant bosses. Vasara 2 has one unique feature, direct contact with the enemy is not deadly – the player is only slightly repelled.

Overview & History

Developed by Visco and released in Japanese arcades in 2003 on SNK's MVS (Multi Video System) hardware, Vasara 2 serves as the sequel to the cult-classic vertical scrolling shoot 'em up. Building upon the Sengoku-era futuristic sci-fi aesthetic of its predecessor, the game drops players into an alternate, mecha-infused feudal Japan where historical figures must battle against the tyrannical hegemon Oda Nobunaga. While the original cabinet saw limited distribution outside of Japan, the title has since earned a revered status among arcade purfers and shmup enthusiasts for its dense bullet-hell patterns, striking sprite work, and unique melee-focused scoring mechanics.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional vertical shoot 'em ups that rely solely on ranged firepower, Vasara 2 revolutionizes the genre by heavily integrating close-quarters combat. Players choose from a distinct roster of warriors—each piloting advanced flying armor or riding mechanical mounts—who wield devastating melee weapons alongside their standard projectile arrays. The core mechanic revolves around the "Vasara" meter, which fills as you destroy enemies and collect fragments. Unleashing a Vasara attack allows characters to execute a screen-clearing, high-damage melee slash that obliterates incoming bullets and grants temporary invulnerability. Scoring hinges on aggressive play; defeating enemies at close range dramatically multiplies point values. The game features branching stages, intense boss rushes against rival historical warlords, and a punishing difficulty curve that demands precise micro-dodging through intricate, overlapping laser webs.
