The space ship Monotros has returned after receiving an SOS call to save his home world (Volfied) from alien invaders and has to defeat a different boss and his minions in each level. Volfied is very similar to Qix — the player takes control of an ship/object whose purpose is to roam the screen, forming shapes and removing them from the play field. By way of reward, a picture is gradually revealed in the removed areas of the screen. The borders of the area which the player has not cleared become the border of the area the player’s pointer can move along. When not cutting the ship is protected by a shield the shield decreases over time and when it hits zero the enemies can also killl you when not cutting.

The player’s object must avoid contact with any of the enemies which float around the screen, as this will weaken and eventually destroy it. Barriers limit which parts of the border boxes can be formed through. The goal is to clear 80% or more of the screen, and each additional percent adds bonus points. Most levels contain power-up blocks these power-ups can be claimed when the area around it is removed. Possible power-ups are increased speed (S), time frees for the enemies (T), pause you shield from counting down (P), a laser to shoot the smaller enemies (L), all smaller enemies are killed instantly (C) and a weapon to kill the boss (a red tomato only found in blocks with the red light).

This game allows for one or two player games in three difficulty levels, but offers no passwords or saved games across its numerous levels.

Developed and published by Taito in 1989, Volfied is a legendary arcade masterpiece that serves as the definitive spiritual successor to the company's own iconic 1981 classic, Qix. Breaking away from typical side-scrolling shoot 'em ups of its era, Volfied drops players into a visually striking sci-fi setting where humanity's survival hinges on geometric territory conquest. The storyline casts the player as the pilot of a diminutive yet nimble reconnaissance craft named the "Monotarus." Returning from deep space, you find your home planet Volfied ravaged and enslaved by a malevolent alien race known as the Zardon. To liberate the planet, your ship must infiltrate the colossal defense structures of the alien mothership, slicing away chunks of the enemy's grid while dodging a relentless swarm of hostile security drones, laser barriers, and biomechanical bosses.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, Volfied is an addictive puzzle-action hybrid played across a series of increasingly complex, single-screen enemy boards. The primary mechanic revolves around enclosing areas of the playing field by drawing continuous vector lines from the safety of an already claimed perimeter. Once a closed loop is completed, that territory is harvested, shrinking the available space for wandering enemies and ultimately reducing the playing field to meet the 80% area-clear requirement. To aid in this high-stakes game of intergalactic cutting, players can collect floating power-ups that alter the Monotarus's capabilities. These items grant devastating plasma lasers, speed boosts, time freezes, and shields, transforming the defensive puzzle-solving into an aggressive offensive strike. However, danger is constant: if an enemy or its projectile touches the ship—or worse, the vulnerable line you are actively drawing—you lose a life and reset the current sector's progress.
