Our two happy-go lucky characters, Leo & Papillo, quite by chance, happen to hear about the legendary deeds of BOOK and set out to prove that they can be as gallant in battle against the enemi as he had once been.

Unlike the Master System's The Dragon's Trap, this arcade entry serves up a thrilling multiplayer romp through Monster Land. Players assume the roles of Leo, a heroic young lad, and Princess Priscilla, as they embark on an urgent quest to purge the realm of a demonic invasion spearheaded by the Dark King. Spanning six distinct stages—ranging from lush forests and subterranean caverns to volcanic chambers and futuristic airships—the narrative unfolds through vibrant, colorful sprite work and cinematic stage transitions that push the System 16 hardware to its limits.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

What truly sets Monster Lair apart is its unique stage-by-stage structural split. The first half of every level plays out as a traditional side-scrolling platformer where Leo and Priscilla wield swords, toss magical projectiles, and collect gold to purchase vital health upgrades and attack power-ups. However, upon reaching the halfway mark, the gameplay drastically shifts into a frantic, horizontal scrolling shoot-'em-up. Our heroes mount flying beasts—including a fire-breathing dragon, a robotic bird, and a majestic pegasus—blasting waves of monstrous aerial and ground threats. This clever dual-genre design requires players to master both ground-based melee combat and precise aerial dodging. Furthermore, collecting glowing orbs charges up devastating special screen-clearing attacks, while cooperative two-player synergy allows for coordinated onslaughts against relentless boss encounters, such as the monstrous cyclops and mechanical dragons.
