Zero Team U.S.A. is a 2D side-scrolling Japanese superhero-themed beat ’em-up game that puts the player in the shoes of either the male fighters Ace, Speed and Big O or the female fighter Spin. The team is pursuing the kidnappers of women.

Each fighter has their own set of moves that include hand to hand moves, kicks and special moves. Along the way, various items like barrels, scooters and crates can be picked up and thrown at the enemies. It is also possible to use weapons like spears and bazookas dropped by enemies and use these against them. Items to replenish health and valuables to increase your score can also be found. Enemies include hand to hand fighters, ninjas and various bosses. The game can be played solo or with up to three friends.

Set against a backdrop of a global crime syndicate threatening peaceful cities, the storyline follows a specialized, renegade task force deployed to punch, kick, and weaponize their way through waves of urban thugs, mutant freaks, and heavily armored bosses. While the original Japanese release (simply titled Zero Team) featured minor localization and sprite differences, the USA revision tweaked the difficulty balance and introduced punchier sound effects tailored for Western arcade floors. Though it never achieved massive mainstream ubiquity, it remains a treasured, high-energy gem for retro enthusiasts who appreciate dense sprite-scaling, destructible environments, and frantic four-player co-op brawling.

Players choose from a diverse roster of operatives—each boasting unique stats in speed, power, and reach—and execute blistering combos that culminate in devastating special throws and aerial slams. The combat loop encourages environmental destruction; players can shatter phone booths, pick up stray lead pipes, throw motorcycles, and even hijack enemy vehicles such as mounted-gun jeeps and steamrollers to plow directly through enemy hordes. Furthermore, the game features a dynamic weapon degradation system and screen-clearing cooperative attacks that drain a portion of the player’s health, forcing tactical resource management during brutal boss encounters against towering cyborgs and martial arts masters.
