Overview & History

Released by Atlus in 1994, Gogetsuji Legends (known in Japan as Gokuu Rasetsu--Den) is the eccentric, monster-spawning sequel to Power Instinct. Shifting away from standard street brawling, this arcade fighting game dives headfirst into supernatural absurdity, focusing on the bizarre Gogetsuji family as they battle every five years to determine their clan's new master. The storyline brings back Oshima and Otane, the terrifying elderly sisters capable of turning into fierce demons, alongside a wildly diverse roster featuring a martial arts-practicing priest, a pop idol, and a giant sumo wrestler. It stands out in 90s arcade history for blending traditional 2D sprite-based combat with rapid pacing and deeply humorous, over-the-top character transformations.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gogetsuji Legends refined the mechanics of its predecessor by introducing the innovative "Tag Team" system, allowing players to select two characters and switch between them mid-match using dedicated assist maneuvers. The gameplay is exceptionally fast-paced, emphasizing mobility with double-jumps and forward dashes. Character moves are wildly distinct; for instance, Otane can fire projectiles of false teeth, and transforming into her youthful, levitating alter-ego drastically alters her frame data and attack range. The game also features destructible background elements and the signature rage meter, which builds as you take damage, eventually granting temporary super-armor and amplified special move damage to turn the tide of battle.
